My name is Danny Cavanagh. I started working in the sidewalk department for the Town of Truro in March 1980. I was proud to land my first union job, back then, and I’m proud of it all now. Over the years, I had the honour of serving as the local union president of CUPE 734 representing the outside workers on the Town, to becoming the president of the Truro and District Labour Council, the president of CUPE Nova Scotia and a member of CUPE’s National Executive board and ending it all as President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour until retiring in that position in October 2025.
This site is about the journey from those sidewalks to the broader fight for fairness across Nova Scotia. It is a place for plain talk about government decisions, workers’ rights, public policy, and the issues that affect our communities every day.
You will find my thoughts and opinions on issues and news of the day. You will also find updates on union events, community actions, and important issues facing working people in our province.
This is a space for solidarity, respect, and honest conversation. If you care about fairness, good jobs, in both the private and public sector and having strong public services as the backbone of local community economic values, and standing up for one another, you are in the right place.

Sidewalks to Solidarity is a place where I share my thoughts and opinions on the issues that affect working people in Nova Scotia. It offers plain talk about government decisions, public policy, and the real impact they have on our communities. The site also shares union news, events, and actions that matter to working people across the province. It is about staying informed, staying connected, and standing together for fairness and respect.
